Ya Rona digital ambassadors explore NEMISA campus in student showcase

People taking part in the Ya Rona Digital Ambassadors Programme got a glimpse of digital media and creative skills at a walkabout and student showcase at the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA) in Auckland Park.

The campus tour was part of the induction process for Ya Rona ambassadors and involved representatives from the Community Education and Training (CET) sector.

The experience went beyond an induction session for the ambassadors, however, as they were able to see how digital skills are put to use by students in creative projects.

Showcased digital abilities at NEMISA

The ambassadors were able to see how students at NEMISA had been applying their digital and creative skills in a series of showcases.

The areas featured included:

TV and Radio Production

Graphic Design

Animation

Content Editing

The students outlined their approaches and the ambassadors were able to hear more about how projects and processes were handled.

The student showcases were a way for the visiting ambassadors to get an insight into the practical application of digital media, from concept to production and editing of content.

Linking theory to practice

The ambassadors saw the connection between the learning process at NEMISA and how students were taking their skills and using them for practical purposes.

For the Ya Rona ambassadors, seeing how students demonstrated their capabilities was a form of exposure to fields which required digital and creative expertise.

The experience was also useful in showing how digital skills could extend beyond IT competencies to areas involving creative production, such as animation, TV and radio, design and content editing.

Benefits of campus walkthrough

The experience helped to reinforce the practical application of digital skills for the ambassadors, who were able to ask questions and speak to students about how content was being produced.

Meanwhile, the students were able to demonstrate their capabilities and have an opportunity to outline their processes to ambassadors from a digital-focused programme.

Practical showcase for Ya Rona induction

The walkthrough was part of an induction process for the Ya Rona Digital Ambassadors Programme, which included exposure to practical application at NEMISA.

The ambassadors are people who will be expected to promote the use of digital capabilities in their respective communities.

The exposure to the students and their work gave the ambassadors an example of how digital knowledge and capabilities were being applied in practice.

Innovation and education in focus

The showcase was an illustration of how students were using innovation as part of the learning process.

The students were able to show the ambassadors the kind of work they were capable of as a result of their specialisations, while the visitors got an insight into the creative process behind digital production.

The walkthrough at the Auckland Park campus was, then, more than a showcase of student work. It was an illustration of how people could develop their digital capabilities and use them to produce content which had relevance to audiences.
